Jury out on mental ward death
Date published: 24 July 2008
A YOUNG Oldham man died in a mental health seclusion room where he was being monitored, an inquest in Heywood heard yesterday.
The 10-strong jury heard how 24-year-old Azrar Ayub, a former pupil of Hathershaw School, died after suffering a heart attack.
The inquest was told that the nurse monitoring him had to stand on a chair to see him through the window of the room at Prestwich Hospital, and that the glass was scratched.
Doctors thought that Mr Ayub’s agitated state prior to his restraint might be relevant to his death, in May, 2004.
The jury in the six-week long inquest has now retired to reach a verdict.
