Peace walk marks Hiroshima Day
Date published: 01 August 2008
Local supporters of world peace will stage their 23rd annual walk in Uppermill on Hiroshima Day, on Wednesday.
Walkers will set off on the circular walk from the stepping stones at King George VI playing fields in Uppermill at 7pm and finish around 8.30pm.
At the end of the walk, candles will be lit and tiny symbols of peace will be floated down the river as readings and talks take place on working for peace.
Steve Roman, secretary of the Saddleworth Peace Movement, said: “We attract people from Saddleworth, Oldham, Greater Manchester and beyond. The walk is part of Oldham’s Festival of Diversity and commemorates all those who have suffered during the nuclear age.”
