Campaign demands tunnel be reopened

CAMPAIGNERS from all over the country gathered at the entrance to the Woodhead rail tunnel at the weekend to demand that it is protected for future rail use.
The tunnel has been closed to trains for more than 20 years but many people believe there is now an excellent case for reopening the underground route between Sheffield and Manchester.
They say it would meet national climate change commitments, relieve road congestion and boost the local economy.
Jonathan Atkinson, spokesman for Save the Woodhead Tunnel, said the ball is now in the Government’s court.
He added: “Everyone now sees the common sense case in reopening the Woodhead line.
“MPs, businesses and unions, the Northern Way group of regional development agencies and now the local community have demonstrated their support. It’s up to Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly to include Woodhead in the forthcoming transport white paper.”
Representatives from Save the Woodhead Tunnel are to meet Rail Minister Rosie Winterton in October.
