A FATHER and his 16-year-old son died following an accident involving two cars on the M62 yesterday morning.

Gary Proctor (47) and his son James, from Wakefield, were critically injured after their Fiat Punto was in collision with a black Audi Quattro just before 6am after passing Birch Services westbound.

A 44-year-old woman was also seriously injured in the collision and was treated in hospital for broken ribs and a broken arm. She remains in a stable condition.

They were on their way to Manchester Airport for a holiday in America when the accident happened.

All three were taken to hospital but the man and boy died as a result of their injuries a short time later.

The Audi had previously been seen driving at speed along the carriageway by drivers in the West Yorkshire area.

Police investigating the incident have appealed for anyone who witnessed the Audi driving along the motorway to contact them.

A large portion of the M62 was closed between junction 19 at Heywood and junction 18 at Simister Island while an investigation into the collision was conducted.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Insp Andy Hudson said: “This is an absolute tragedy for this family who had been on their way to Manchester Airport to start a summer holiday in America.

“My thoughts are with them all.

“We need anyone who saw this Audi being driven possibly at speed along the M62 westbound earlier this morning to call us straight away.

“You might have information that is vital to our investigation.”

Inquiries are continuing. Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 0161-872 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555 111.
