Jane Royle: Great Wall walk
AN Oldham community nurse is to take part in a trek across the Great Wall of China to raise money for research into asthma.
Jane Royle (40), from Dobcross, regularly sees the debilitating impact of breathing problems and wanted to make a difference.
She said: “One in 12 people in the UK has asthma, so if you don’t have it, you probably know someone who has.
“Someone dies of an asthma attack every seven hours in the UK and many more sufferers shy away from sports and high-energy activities because of their condition.
“The money I raise will fund more research into the causes of this condition and help free people with asthma from its effects.”
The 10-day trek may not take place until September next year, but Jane, who will be accompanied by two colleagues, has wasted no time in throwing herself into training.
She has been walking three times a week and taking on longer treks at the weekend to prepare for the vastly varied terrain.
Jane said: “The altitude won’t be a great problem, but some sections of the wall are very steep and the surfaces are uneven. It looks like I might have to zipwire certain parts of the journey.”
The 60km hike will take Jane through terraced farmland, woodland and old and restored sections of the wall, but she needs to raise a minimum of £2,850.
She said: “I’m going to be working on my days off and doing lots of overtime to help raise the money and would be grateful to anyone who would like to sponsor me.”
