A MAN has been charged after a father and son were killed in a crash on the M62 as they headed for a dream family holiday.

The family of Gary Proctor (47) and his son James (16), from Wakefield, have paid tribute to the pair following the tragedy early on Sunday morning.

Imran Hussain (31), of Como Avenue, Bradford, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and making threats to kill.

He was due to appear at Rochdale Magistrates’ Court today.

Gary’s wife, Catherine (44), was badly injured in the collision and is currently in a stable condition in hospital, being treated for broken ribs and a broken arm.

The family were travelling on the westbound carriageway, heading to Manchester Airport for a holiday in America, when their Fiat Punto was in collision with an Audi Quattro as they passed Birch Services.

Relatives said: “We are in total disbelief. James was a lovely, smashing lad. He was very thoughtful and very clever. He loved sport, in particular cricket, snowboarding and golf.

“He had saved his pocket money with the intention of buying a new set of golf clubs while on holiday in America.

“They both loved sport and had season tickets for the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team. Gary and James regularly played golf together.

“Gary was quiet and unassuming, He had a good sense of humour and loved a laugh.

“Both he and Catherine idolised James. They were looking forward to the holiday of a lifetime.”

Insp Andy Hudson said: “This is an absolute tragedy for this family who had been on their way to Manchester Airport to start a summer holiday in America. My thoughts are with them all.”
