Group marches for peace

SADDLEWORTH’S 23rd annual peace walk has been hailed a huge success.
Walkers set off on the circular walk to mark Hiroshima Day from the stepping stones at the King George VI plying fields in Uppermill yesterday.
The event was held as part of the borough’s Festival of Diversity celebrations.
At the end of the walk, candles were lit and tiny symbols of peace were floated down the river before readings and talks got under way.
The peace walk commemorates all those who have suffered during the nuclear age, as well as making links between conflict, the arms trade, poverty, unfair trade and racism, globally and locally.
Steve Roman, secretary of the Saddleworth Peace Movement, said: “Around 35 people joined us from Saddleworth, Oldham, Manchester and Huddersfield. Some of the supporters sang for us and many spoke of the nuclear age.”
