Chief’s force switch brought forward

GREATER Manchester’s new chief constable is to start work two months early.

Peter Fahy (49), currently heading the Cheshire police force, has had his three-month notice period wavered so he can start on September 1. The move will allow both police forces a chance to establish leaders at the earliest opportunity. The father-of-four replaces former chief constable Michael Todd who was found dead on Snowdon in March.

Greater Manchester Police is one of the country’s biggest forces and employs about 8,000 officers.

Russell Bernstein, GMPA deputy chief executive, said: “I hope people will agree moving ahead of schedule in this way is logical as it allows both authorities to concentrate on the business of establishing a new leader to take their respective forces forward at the earliest opportunity.”
