Academy opponents protest
ANTI-ACADEMY campaigners will maintain pressure on the council when they take to the streets again.
More than 100 people protested in April against plans to replace Breeze Hill and Counthill schools with an academy on the former Orb Mill site.
The move is part of Oldham Council’s £230 million proposals to transform secondary education, including replacing another three schools with two academies run by sponsors
However, the Waterhead Anti-Academy Group, which is mainly made up of residents, believes that the proposed location is too small for 1,500 pupils, will cause problems for residents, and create traffic chaos on already busy roads.
Demonstrators will hold a second protest at the proposed site in Huddersfield Road on Wednesday, August 20, from 3.30pm to 5pm.
Ken Sharp from the group believes that most parents do not understand the proposals and added: “We are keeping the pressure on the council.
“People in Waterhead do not want an academy built in the district. We do not think it will be good for Waterhead.”
