A 100-YEAR-OLD woman from Oldham will be doing a little dance to celebrate her birthday.

Hilda Wright, who reached her century yesterday, will take to the floor at the Savoy Ballroom, Blackpool, tomorrow.

The resort and the ballroom are on a regular holiday trail for Hilda and her relatives.

And when Hilda of St Clement’s Court, Falcon Street, gets back, there will be sequence dancing on Saturday at St George’s Centre, Chadderton.

She has always believed in the benefits of physical exercise and until she was 95 she walked four miles most days of the week to keep fit.

Hilda was born in 1908 and grew up in Pembroke Street off Union Street West, Oldham.
She went to St Thomas’s School, Werneth Hall Road, and left at 13 to work in a cotton mill.

Nowadays, Hilda enjoys trips to Highbarn Day Centre, Royton, five days a week, and goes to Royton Market every Thursday.

She has one daughter and two grandchildren who take a great interest in their grandmother’s progress.

A party was thrown at Highbarn Day Centre for Hilda on Friday.

Lead member of adult services and health, Councillor Brian Lord, said: “Hilda is an amazing woman. She is still active at 100 and still fiercely independent.

“She is still joining in activities and enjoying life to the full and I hope that she will continue to do so for many years to come.”
