CHADDERTON Neighbourhood Policing Unit and the Fire and Rescue Service are using pedal power to fight crime and prevent fires in the area.
The two teams have been using bicycles for some time, but have recently joined forces to patrol together.
Sgt Kam Hare said: “Not only is it a more environmentally friendly way of travelling but it increases the visibility of the police and the fire service in the community.
“Residents tell us that they want to see more police officers and police community support officers out on the streets.
“Using bikes helps us to cover more ground during a shift and engage with more members of the community than we would on foot.”
Simon Wheelwright, of Chadderton Fire Station, said it was employing pedal power in a bid to engage with locals and visit neighbourhoods to develop relationships between the fire service and the local community.
He added: “We are also providing a reassuring visible presence alongside the police, offering fire safety advice and working to reduce arson and anti-social behaviour against firefighters.”
While out on the bikes, firefighters will be putting their expert knowledge to use by alerting other agencies to piles of rubbish, grass cuttings or vulnerable vehicles and buildings — all of which are potential targets for arsonists and will lead to a reduction in fires.
The Neighbourhood Policing Team is looking for sponsorship for some new police bikes for Chadderton officers. Contact Sgt Hare on 0161-856 8815 or email kam.hare@gmp.police.uk
