He said: “I wasn’t expecting to pass many but it worked out very well.”

Five-star Naila beats the odds

KASKENMOOR’S Naila Ali is celebrating an impressive exam success, despite battling through five years of health problems.

The determined teenager refused to put her studies on hold, despite having to abandon the classroom as she underwent several painful operations to straighten her legs.

Gritty Naila has been in and out of hospital during her entire five years at Kaskenmoor, and said: “I missed lots of school and had to catch up on work in my own time. It took a lot of extra work to keep up with everyone else. When it came to GCSEs, I revised constantly, but it’s all been worth it because I got the results I wanted.”

Naila, who lives in Coppice, got five A*s, 4 As and 1 C, and will go to Oldham Sixth Form College to study biology, chemistry, maths and English.

Jamie makes the grade at 10!

Budding scientist Jamie Van Hunskerken has achieved his first GCSE result at just 10 years old, without doing any revision.

Jamie and his mother, Daisy, both got a science grade B after studying together at Hopwood Hall College, Middleton.

The youngster, from Rochdale, first became interested in the subject when he picked up a science book at a car boot sale on holiday.

He said: “I found it quite easy because I’ve been reading science books for a long time before I did the course.

“I pretty much knew a lot of it already so I didn’t have to revise a lot.”

Jamie took the GCSE course on top of his normal studies at St Edward’s Primary School in Castleton. Mrs Van Hunskerken said: “I’m very proud of him.”
