A MAN with multiple sclerosis who died after falling down stairs at a New Year’s Eve party has given new life to two other people.
John Glynn (51), of Atherley Grove, Chadderton, was a transplant donor and a man and a woman have received his kidneys.
Mr Glynn and his wife Susan went to the party at a friend’s house in Roman Road, Failsworth.
At around 11.30pm, Mr Glynn went upstairs to use the bathroom but on his return he managed to get down three steps before falling, hitting his head.
An Oldham inquest heard, yesterday, that the father-of-one, who worked with people with learning difficulties, discovered he had the crippling condition during a hiking trip a few years ago.
His wife, Susan, said: “John did a lot of hiking despite having MS.
“He didn’t want to give in to it because he would have ended up in a wheelchair. He was a very active man.
“It would occasionally get him down but not always. He was a very heavy drinker which in a strange way helped him with his condition as he would be able to get up and down the stairs.”
Mr Glynn was taken to hospital where his conditon deteriorated. A decision was made to switch off his life support machine.
His kidneys were then used in the transplants.
A post mortem examination revealed that Mr Glynn died of a serious head injury.
Deputy coroner, Elaine Maloney, recorded a verdict of accidental death.
