A SURPRISE Christmas present has led to an international award and a new career path for Gaynor Wilson.

The 43-year-old was given a digital camera by her partner Keith Pearson for Christmas 2006.

Gaynor didn’t have a clue how to use the camera but wanted to make full use of her gift so she completed an online Open University course and loved it so much that she has set up her own photography business.

Shy Violet Photography operates from Gaynor’s Greenfield home and she juggles her hobby turned career with her day job as business support manager at P and R Fire and Security in Lees Road.

When Gaynor realised how much she enjoyed taking pictures she joined the British Freelance Photographers network who put her in touch with Photographers United.

Gaynor’s talent behind the camera was confirmed when she won an award for a snap of her stepdaughter, 19-year-old Jess Pearson, in the International Face 08 category in an online competition organised by www.photographers-united.com.

Judges were particularly impressed with how Gaynor put Jess at ease as well as the way she lit and framed the shot.

Jess was presented with a cheque for £100 for being a fantastic model while Gaynor was given a trophy to mark her achievement.

Gaynor is particularly interested in portrait shots and has a wide ranging portfolio of babies, children, animals, couples and families.

She said: “I have been told by clients that my unique selling point is my ability to help people relax. Very few people actually enjoy having their picture taken so the key is to let the subject tell you exactly what they want and helping them to feel as comfortable as possible and that way they will look more natural which will produce the best possible photograph.

“I don’t tell clients what to do or what to wear or how to stand. I work with them and let them take charge because we both want the end result to be as perfect as possible.”

Gaynor is getting ready to launch a new service for women who want to give the men in their lives a little something special. Visit www.grinandbareit.co.uk to find out more.
