Look back at history

A FEAST of historical snippets will be on offer in the latest DVD produced by the Royton History Society.
As well as the usual update on the excavation of Royton Hall, the latest film will feature aspects of the project which have not previously been covered, including pieces on how the Royton History Society started and why the excavations were carried out.
Viewers can find out how the memorial stone and blue plaque in Hall Street came into being, and a short summary and selected clips of digs one and two by archaeologist Adam Thompson will also be featured.
There is also a special sequence detailing the finds, site photography and recording and a special section on the Marsh Archaeology award which was awarded to the group earlier this year.
The DVD, which took nine months to complete, was created by the history society and produced by local man Geoff Oliver.
Copies of the DVD, which is priced at £5, are available from Royton Library, with the proceeds going towards the continuation of work at Royton Hall.
The society has also produced a free green book, which details the first two years of the excavation, as well as resource packs for local schools.
And an interpretation board, which acts as a handy guide for visitors, has been unveiled next to the memorial stone.
The society is now trying to raise enough money for a footprint of the hall, which will mark the site out with paths and information boards, so that anyone interested can see the size and layout of the building.
