Revised flats plan backed

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a three-storey block of flats in Shaw have been backed by parish councillors.

Shaw and Crompton Parish Council’s planning committee has recommended approving the proposals for nine flats on the former Roundabout Tyres site.

Back in February the committee recommended refusing the plans, but they have since been resubmitted.

The land, off Crompton Way, is adjacent to the former Lyon Mill site, now scheduled for residential development.

Plans for 24 apartments have already been approved on the mill site but the latest block of flats would be on the car parking bay.

Five neighbours had objected to the original plans saying they would lose their privacy and open space and it would cause a reduction in light and an increase in noise pollution.

The committee had agreed but only after the then chairman, Councillor Diane Williamson, used her casting vote with councillors tied at three-all.

The grounds for the decision were given that residents would suffer a loss of amenity, there was no adequate provision for safe vehicle access and secure parking and it would prejudice highway safety.

The latest plans met no such objection from councillors and Oldham Council will now rule on the application.

THE committee was told that part of Buckstones Road, Shaw, is currently closed for up to three months to allow for the carriageway to be repaired after subsidence.

Alternative routes for lorries and normal traffic have been set up.
