Borough GP is to remain suspended

THE General Medical Council (GMC) has backed the continuation of a temporary suspension order imposed on a Chadderton GP.

Dr Jagdish Khurana (73), of Pexwood, Chadderton, cannot practice pending the outcome of an investigation. The order, imposed in December, 2006, will now remain in force until January 31, next year.

The order was imposed by the GMC’s Interim Orders Panel pending the outcome of a GMC probe.

No details of the circumstances leading to imposition of the ban are given in the newly-published decision to uphold the order.

However, a spokesman for the GMC said cases such as this are referred to the Interim Orders Panel when a doctor is facing allegations of such a nature that it may be necessary for the protection of members of the public, or otherwise be in the public interest, or in the interests of the doctor, for the doctor’s registration to be restricted while the allegations are resolved.

The spokesman said that considerations taken into account included preserving public trust in the medical profession and maintaining good standards

In August last year a jury at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court cleared Dr Khurana of three counts of sexual assault on female patients when he was a locum doctor at Chadderton Health Centre.
