WHEN pensioner Aileen Wood broke her leg she knew she could rely on her sprightly 101-year-old mum to take care of her.

In a complete reversal of their traditional roles, Aileen found herself being pushed around in Ivy Howard’s wheelchair as she recovered.

The pair enjoyed a holiday with friends in Cleveleys and Ivy, who enjoys exercising, line dancing and socialising with friends, was more than willing to push her daughter around the coastline.

Aileen (74), who teaches keep fit at St Edward’s Church in Lees, said: “I was just locking up for the night when I slipped down the kitchen step and heard my leg crack.

“I crawled into my mum’s room and we went to A&E where I was put into plaster which I had to wear for seven weeks. My mum is fantastically fit for her age and is looking forward to her 102nd birthday next month. She has been great at looking after me and I am truly on the mend now.”

Ivy celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at St Edward’s Church where she received 110 cards and raised £500 for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

Ivy puts the secret of her long and healthy life down to not smoking or drinking much and enjoying simple home-cooked food.
