Young footballers fly the flag for our own ‘united nations’

Date published: 05 September 2008

OLDHAM Town’s newly-formed youth team certainly embraces the term multi-cultural.

Indeed the under-18 set up, which plays in the North-West Youth Alliance, comprises nine different nationalities. And, although some of the overseas players are British by birth they have foreign roots and ancestry.

The united nations begins with manager Abid Hussain (British/Pakistani) and his No 2 Osmon Tousm who is Serbian.

Nations represented in the team are Bangladesh, England, India, Kurdistan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa.

Hussain, who is a coach at Greenhill Community Sports Club, hit on the idea of forming a youth team to enable him to manage at a higher level.

And Oldham Town, who had disbanded their reserve team this season, were keen to take the new side under their umbrella.

Hussain, who has helped coach Town’s first team, hopes the youth team may eventually step up to replace the reserve team.

Town made a winning start to their North West Youth Alliance campaign, defeating Salford City Colts 3-1 in their first match.

But despite the victory in their opening game, Town are still looking for a striker. Anyone interested can contact Osman Tousm on 0161 622 0557.
