Trapped girl screams for driver to stop

TERRIFIED teenager Sarah Ashworth feared she would die when her arm was trapped in a bus door as the vehicle drove off

The 19-year-old was forced to run alongside the bus screaming for the driver to stop.

She is now too scared to use public transport after the incident outside Oldham Sports Centre at around 9.45pm on Friday.

Sarah, of Raper Street, Greenacres, passed a cigarette to a friend when the 82 First service to Waterhead pulled up and explained: “I put my arm out for the bus and said two seconds to the driver.

“He shut the door, my arm got trapped and he started to drive.

“I had to scream to get him to stop and run with the bus so I didn’t fall.

“He stopped and still wouldn’t let me get on the bus.

“I just thank God it wasn’t an elderly person because they wouldn’t have been able to run with the bus. I thought ‘I am going to die’. It sounds funny but it wasn’t at the time.”

Sarah, who is unemployed, ran with the bus for couple of feet before the driver stopped. Her right arm was left swollen and she still has difficulty using it, but did not visit hospital.

She complained to the First depot at Mumps and has also contacted a solicitor.

She admits that she argued with the driver after the incident and added: “It was the wrong thing to do, I was obviously frightened and angry.”

Bob Mason, service delivery director of First’s bus operations in Greater Manchester said the incident was reported on Monday afternoon and is being investigated.
