More rain to come
Date published: 08 September 2008
OLDHAM was a total washout at the weekend as heavy downpours hit the borough. And the bad news is — we’ve not seen the worst of it yet.
Roads were flooded, parks and gardens were waterlogged and numerous sporting events had to be called off due to the horrendous conditions.
The annual Saddleworth Olympics had to be put back a week as Churchill Playing Fields, where the opening ceremony was to be held, was completely deluged by water.
Damien Rogers, the Chronicle’s weatherman, said: “We had around 25mm of rain over the weekend which is what we would usually expect to see in a week in September. This month has already been really wet — with half the expected total monthly rainfall coming down in just a week — and the future is not looking any brighter. Tomorrow will be extremely wet and there will be another heavy rainstorm on Friday. The rest of the month will continue in the same way with lots of rain.”
