LEES vet Joanna Bednarska gives kitten Angel a cuddle after its ordeal
A sickening attack on a tiny kitten has appalled vets.
The kitten, nicknamed Angel, was kicked senseless by two thugs in Coldhurst and then lashed with a metal bike chain.
Angel was left for dead with her intestines hanging out. But with care and patience, she is now recovering.
Judy Pass, practice manager at County End Vets, High Street, Lees, said it was one of the worst cruelty cases they had come across.
She said: “This little kitten was only six months old. It is one of the worst cases we have seen.”
Vet Joanna Bednarska said: “The kitten was brought in on Friday evening.
“The people who found her said her insides were hanging out.
“Normally when someone says this, it is an exaggeration. But it was no exaggeration in this case.
“I gave the kitten anaesthetic and had to remove a bit of the small intestine and part of the colon because they were so badly damaged.
“I was able to stitch back the intestines. Now, thankfully, the kitten has started to recover.
“Some feeling has returned to her right leg which had no feeling in it before.
“It is early days but we are hoping that Angel will recover from her ordeal.”
The kitten was found by Jimmy Trelfa, of Anchor Street, Coldhurst, who together with his neighbour Natalie Stott took it to the vets which was operating a late night service.
He said: “I was watching TV at 11pm when I glanced out of the window and saw two lads flailing their arms about with a bike chain.
“Then I spotted something small on the pavement which turned out to be the kitten.
“My dog started barking and the lads ran off.
“The lads were aged 13 to 15 and when I went outside to have a look I found the cat was in a right bloody mess.
“I am pleased that it has started to recover from its injuries.”
