Thug locked up for attacks on mum

A violent thug who attacked his girl friend and slapped her eight-year-old son around the face has been jailed for two years.

Stuart Whiting (28), had been out drinking and got into an argument with girl friend Lisa Probert when he returned.

Miss Probert was so scared that she put her arm through a window as she tried to attract passers by.

Whiting, of Dunham Street, Oldham, pleaded guilty at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, to common assault and putting a person in fear of violence by harassment.

Prosecuting, Miss Louise Brandon said the first incident happened in February when Miss Probert, the defendant’s girl friend, was at the home she shared with the defendant and her children.

“The defendant started to shout at her about her son leaving his drinks around. The defendant slapped her on the side of her face very hard.

“The other incident occurred on March 2 after Miss Probert, her two sons and the defendant went to a Christening. The defendant was drinking.

“They left together and on their arrival home he began to argue because she had allowed the children to play when the defendant had told them not to.

“He demanded £20 off Miss Probert and he left slamming the door. He later returned and the argument continued.

She went upstairs and got in bed but the argument continued.

“The defendant pushed her on the chest until she was in the corner of the bedroom.

“The defendant then put his hand around her throat and was shouting at her. She tried to bang on the window to get help.

“The window smashed and her arm was cut. The defendant released his grip and she asked him to call an ambulance. He said ‘I’ll get locked up’. He went into the children’s bedroom and hit the boy across the face.

“Her son has managed to put the incident behind him but she was concerned about her injuries and the scarring.

“The defendant was arrested on March 5.”

The court heard that Whiting had a record of affray and had assaulted a police constable. Last year he was given a suspended sentence for GBH.

He was sentenced to four months back in July, 2007, — but the term was suspended for 18 months. He admitted breaching the order.

Defending, Mr Mark Benson said: “Those incidents were disgraceful and he regrets them. He fully accepts that the relationship is now over and he asks me to reassure the court that there will be no repeat of this offence.”

Sentencing, Judge Bernard Lever said: “You are a thoroughly violent young man and if you keep on committing offences of violence then you will be seen as a danger to the public and locked up indefinitely.”
