Sacred Harp singers
Date published: 12 September 2008
SINGERS in Oldham are being invited to join others from across the UK and America to take part in a special event.
The 13th UK Sacred Harp Convention is taking place at the Mechanics Institute in Marsden tomorrow and Sunday from 10.30am.
There will be a “bring and share lunch” each day.
Sacred Harp is a unique American tradition that brings people together to sing four-part hymns and anthems.
Events have already proved popular in Oldham and local singers are planning to attend at the weekend, which includes a short singing school led by Matt Wojcik, from Vermont, on Saturday.
The term “sacred harp” refers to the human voice. It also relates to the hymn books used by singers.
Singers sit in a square with one voice part on each side, all facing inwards to see and hear each other and with the song leader in the centre. Renditions are of four-part harmony, a cappella singing.
Anyone is welcome to the convention. For more details contact Chris Brown or Judy Whiting on 01422-311736 or visit www.ukshapenote.org.uk.
