Why we need to save water!
Date published: 15 September 2008
WATER shortages could be just around the corner despite the summer deluge says the campaign group Waterwise.
Waterwise says the UK already has less water available per person than almost any other EU country.
And that is despite the fact that we are taking more water than ever before from the ground, lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
Oldham Liberal Democrat Euro MP Chris Davies sits on the EU environment committee and says by simple measures we could reduce the amount of water we use by 40 per cent.
He said: “Washing machines need to be made even more efficient and perhaps it will become necessary to fit spring taps around the house so we are all less tempted to leave water running to waste.
He added: “A year or so of heavy rain has made us complacent but we should not have to wait for a drought to promote some sensible forward thinking.”
