Referendum: register your vote
Date published: 15 September 2008
OLDHAM residents wanting a say in December’s congestion charge referendum were today urged to make sure they do not lose their right to vote.
The council is updating its electoral register and only people listed on it can vote.
Every home in Oldham has been sent an electoral registration form which should be returned by Wednesday, October 15, to guarantee a vote.
The leader of Oldham Council, Howard Sykes, said: “The referendum on the Transport Innovation Fund is one of the most important issues to be put to the people of Greater Manchester, including all of us in Oldham. At stake is the prospect of the biggest-ever transport improvement programme in Greater Manchester, worth almost £3 billion.
“I wouldn’t like to see any resident in Oldham missing the opportunity to participate in this hugely important vote because their names were not on the electoral roll.”
The referendum will be by postal ballot in Oldham and the other nine Greater Manchester boroughs, closing on December 11.
