Video shows what makes Sholver’s heart beat

BELL-RINGING, cricket, BMX and cross stitching — these are just some of the things that make Sholver residents tick.

People of all ages have got involved with a project to share their interests and pastimes in advance of a community event on Saturday.

It is hoped that the event, which takes place at Sholver Community Centre from noon to 4pm, will encourage new friendships and get people to sign up for interest clubs and groups.

Consultation officer Zerg Raja said: “People will have the first chance to view the results of the Sholver video project.

“This has seen residents learning skills in front of and behind the camera, to record what they and others in Sholver do with their free time.

“Already the group has found out that people are very passionate in their interests which include rambling, local history, ballroom dancing, reading and volunteer work.

“There is even someone who keeps snakes.”

Rupert Brown, Sholver Community Centre manager, added: “The day will be a great chance to share our skills, particularly those of younger people, which is really important for the future cultural life and development of Sholver.

“It shows we can all have a voice in shaping our community. By sharing our interests with each other, we can see what people do and learn about other projects that cross the generations.”

Relationships

The project is supported by the Alt and Sholver Partnership, which is working to bring about the regeneration of the district.

As part of an arts strategy for the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder, the team, including artist Andy Abbott, is working with residents to explore the relationships people have with issues such as culture, arts, regeneration, and the environment.
