The accelerating cost of scrap cars has hit local charity Kick Start hard.
The group, which helps disadvantaged youngsters at its Vulcan Street base in Derker, is running out of donated cars.
Curriculum leader Paul Sykes said motorists with an old banger are now collecting £120 to £200 for their unwanted vehicles.
Beforehand they were giving them away for nothing or paying to have them towed to a scrapyard.
This left fewer motorists wanting to make a donation of their old car.
Paul said: “The cars are simply used for study and never go back on the road. But we have run short of cars to work on and would like to appeal to people with a social conscience to make a donation of cars they don’t want.”
Anyone who can help Kick Start is asked to call Paul on 0161-620 4438.
