Trickster preys on pensioner
Date published: 23 September 2008
A THIEF stole a large amount of cash after conning his way into an elderly woman’s home in Werneth.
The offender knocked on the door of the 83-year-old victim’s home in Suffolk Street at around 1pm on September 1.
He told the pensioner he was a handyman and asked her if she needed any work doing.
He then told the victim she needed some repair work carrying out in the bathroom and promised to return.
But during the visit he had found and taken a large amount of money.
The offender is described as white, slightly tanned, 5ft 10in tall, of stocky build and with short black hair.
Det Con Rob Kennedy, from Oldham CID, said: “This man tricked his way into an elderly woman’s home under the guise of being there to help her. Instead, he has taken full advantage of her and stolen a large amount of cash.
“This man is an unscrupulous thief and I am appealing for the public’s help to trace him. If anyone recognises the description of the offender or may have seen him acting suspiciously in the area, please get in touch.”
Police have issued safety tips to help vulnerable residents. They include keeping the door on the latch, not letting anyone in without verifying ID and, if unsure, asking them to call back when a family member, friend or neighbour is present.
Anyone with information is asked to Oldham CID on 0161 856 8951 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
