Patients can get kidney check-up
Date published: 24 September 2008
SCREENING days to spot Oldham people at risk of chronic kidney disease start in Chadderton on Saturday.
Kidney Research UK’s national screening pilot will be at the Woodlands medical practice in Chadderton Town Health Centre.
It will target people who have not visited the doctor during the last three years.
Kidney disease affects around three million people in the UK, many of who are unaware of the condition.
Dr Ian Wilkinson, GP principal at Woodlands, said: “We’re delighted to be among the first screenings in this very important national pilot.
“This disease has no symptoms but can progress to kidney failure if untreated, so it makes sense to target those who are over 18 but haven’t had contact with their doctor in the last three years.
“There is no substitute for early diagnosis.”
People can book an appointment by calling Chadderton Town Health Centre directly on 0161-909 8131.
The appointments will last for approximately 45 minutes and patients will have their height, weight and blood pressure checked, and will be asked for blood and urine samples.
Further information can be obtained from the Kidney Health Information Line on 0845-300 1499.
