Tory fear for council jobs
Date published: 24 September 2008
JOB losses from Oldham Council were predicted with the move to Cabinet-style councils, according to Conservative finance spokesman councillor John Hudson.
The shock news that 850 council jobs could go — exclusively revealed in the Chronicle last week — prompted Councillor Hudson to make the claim.
He reckons the number of council employees per 1,000 head of population was the highest in the area.
“However, until we know the facts, the Conservative group will be unable to make serious comment on the present situation which has been overseen by various Labour and Lib- Dem administrations,” he said.
“The one sad fact is that until the matter can be fully debated — and facts made known — the situation for many employees and their families is very worrying.”
