Cricket pavilion in flames

OFFICIALS from Bamford Fieldhouse Cricket Club, near Rochdale, were today counting the cost of a fire in the pavilion.
Three fire appliances were called out at 11pm yesterday after smoke was spotted coming from the Hollin Lane ground.
Andy Barton, the Bamford first-team captain and chairman of the club, was quickly on the scene.
Much of the damage was concentrated on the pavilion which was opened in 1981.
The conservatory at the front of the structure was also affected, but the fire was extinguished before it had time to spread to the changing rooms.
Mr Barton said: “We’ve just spent a lot of money on refurbishing the building and now this has happened.
“It’s a right mess. The ceiling has come down, there is fire and smoke damage and also water everywhere. I feel sick.”
Bamford are the reigning Saddleworth and District Cricket League champions.
