School caretaker suspended from job

A PRIMARY school caretaker has been suspended from his job after being charged with assault.
Mark Gee, of Arbour Road, Holts is no longer undertaking his duties at Mills Hill Primary School, Chadderton while he faces legal action.
The 26-year-old was charged with assault and possession of a knife on May 22 after police were called to Leam Street, Ashton on December 15 following reports that a woman had been assaulted.
Parents at the Baytree Avenue school had expressed concern that someone due in court on such charges was still working with children.
But the Local Education Authority has confirmed that Mr Gee has been suspended pending the outcome of the case.
Mr Gee appeared at Tameside Magistrates Court on June 4 but the two charges were separated.
He elected to be tried at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester on the charge of possession of a bladed article, where the case was dismissed last week when the prosecution offered no evidence.
But he faces trial at Tameside Magistrates Court on October 9 on the charge of assault.
School headteacher Darren Lee declined to comment on the case.
But in response to parents’ concerns, Oldham Council cabinet member for children, young people and families, Councillor Kay Knox, said: “The council is not able to comment on individual members of staff. However, I would like to reassure parents that we have robust procedures in place to ensure that our schools are safe and secure places for children to learn and thrive.
“The conduct of staff members both in and outside of their work environment, is important to the council and governors when judging an employee’s suitability. Our joint priority is always the safety of the pupils and where an employee is found to be unsuitable appropriate action is taken.
“In this case a member of staff has been suspended and we are working closely with the governors to resolve this matter.”
