Switch light bulbs to save the world

Learn with Kev: the art of being ECO-FRIENDLY,

IF there’s one favour it would be nice to do for your great-great-grandchildren, it’s to save the world so they don’t have to move into outer space.

We can only do this if we’re not washed away by floods or burnt to a crisp by an unexpected heatwave, so it would appear we have to get friendly with the environment and the eco-system that keeps it stable.

It may be that climate change has already gone beyond the point of no return for much of the UK but, in true British style, you can switch to low energy light bulbs and have a jolly good go at stopping it anyway.

What do you mean it’s pointless because China keeps opening hundreds of huge new factories?

Well, every little bit counts. You can only worry about your own carbon footprint and besides, how else could we buy trainers so cheaply?

If you’re going to take up eco-friendliness then the key is to reduce the amount of energy you use.

This means spending most of the day on the settee and moving only when absolutely necessary.

If the heating’s on too high or you can’t reach the TV remote, it’s tough, personal sacrifice is what’s needed to protect the planet.

My grandad was an environmentalist so it’s in my blood. He was always saying “Turn that bloody light off.” and he’d been recycling old jokes for years.

He would have found the one about plastic bags taking a thousand years to decompose hilarious! Wait a minute. . . that’s not a joke is it?

Once you’ve gone eco-friendly, you won’t be alone. Everyone’s getting into it now and with the excitement of different coloured bins, who can blame them?

My neighbours are so enthusiastic about recycling glass that they’re going through three of four bottles of wine a night.

Even God’s doing his bit with the opening of a brand new Eco church in Audenshaw on Saturday. It has solar panels on its roof and under floor heating powered by thermal pipes which are drilled 100 metres into the earths core.

It means worshipers are being kept warm thanks to the burning fires of hell. You can guarantee most of the people down there used to leave the landing light on.

Next week… the art of Assumption.
