The appliance of science

DRUG discovery, jet engine manufacture, DNA studies — it’s all taking place at Royton and Crompton School as part of the Greater Manchester Science Festival.

Pupils from schools across the borough visited Royton and Crompton last week for the festival’s launch and took part in activities such as the science of chocolate, art in science and engineering.

And science experiments were not just restricted to inside the school thanks to the Lab-in Lorry, from the Institute of Physics, which set up in the car park for a four-day visit.

Mark Pritchard, head of science, said: “The Greater Manchester Science Network highlights this event as an exciting opportunity. The festival will showcase the region’s innovative science research and practise to a large public audience.

“It aims to share the excellent theoretical and applied science, engineering and technology from across the region in areas as diverse as psychology, built environment and technology.

“At Royton and Crompton, a standard is set for others to follow.”
