Parents pay the price of truancy

OLDHAM parents have been prosecuted for failing to make sure their child attends school.
Sharon Travers and Paul Shaw, of Great Gable Close, Derker, were fined £215 each with £95 costs each after their 14-year-old son missed 36 out of 62 half-day sessions at Royton and Crompton School between February and April.
Shafquat Sohail and Akram Mohammed, of Eric Street, Greenacres, were were fined £215 each with £95 costs each after their 11-year-old son missed 27 out of 48 half-day sessions at Clarksfield Primary between March and April.
Tracy Hamer, of Wilson Way, Oldham Edge, has been fined £215 with £95 costs after her 10-year-old daughter missed 19 out of 54 half-day sessions at The Parish Church CE School between February and April.
She was also given the same penalty after her 12-year-old son missed 27 out of 62 half-days at Royton and Crompton School between December, 2007, and April.
Alan Booth, of St Martin’s Road, Fitton Hill, was fined £415 with £95 costs after his 15-year-old son missed 33 out of 34 half-day sessions at Hathershaw College of Technology and Sport between February and March.
Mohammed Mushtaq and Shamin Akhtar, of Allamaiqbal Road, Glodwick, were fined £215 each with £125 costs each after their 14-year-old son missed 62 out of 136 half-day sessions at Breeze Hill School between April and July.
The prosecutions were brought by Oldham Council’s children, young people and families department.
