A TEENAGER was stabbed in the arm and chest during a disturbance in Mossley on Saturday night.

Police were called to Manchester Road shortly before 11pm after a 17-year-old boy suffered stab wounds.

He was taken to Tameside General Hospital, Ashton, for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 19-year-old man later contacted the police having suffered facial injuries, and a 21-year-old man needed treatment for a broken jaw.

Four men — two aged 21, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old — were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in police custody for questioning.

Last year (2007-08) there were 2,294 knife crime incidents across Greater Manchester.

Earlier this month, the new chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, Mr Peter Fahy, vowed to take tough action against anyone found carrying a knife in a public place.

He said his force was committed to reducing the number of knives and offensive weapons on the streets.

Det Insp Andy Aston, from Tameside CID, said: “This incident happened quite close to the Commercial pub and it is possible that some of the people who had been drinking there would have seen something.

“Incidents of this nature are quite rare in this area and we are keen to trace all the people responsible.

“If anyone does remember seeing anything that could help us with our inquiry, I would ask them to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact Tameside CID on 0161-856 5246 or the Crimestoppers charity (anonymously) on 0800-555 111.
