Union slams makeover as ‘utter contempt’ for staff

THE council has denied that it is showing “utter contempt” by refurbishing the new chief executive’s office when 850 jobs are on the line.
However, a senior officer was unable to say how much the work would cost.
GMB convenor Jim McDermott alleged that the offices of new chief executive Charlie Parker, and council leader Howard Sykes, were getting a complete makeover.
This would be followed by the refurbishment of the Rochdale Road reception, done only a few years ago, and the re-carpeting of the members’ chamber, he added
Mr McDermott believes the work will cost £50,000 and said it showed utter contempt when the council planned to axe up to 850 posts to help save £17.3 million.
Deputy council leader Jackie Stanton confirmed Councillor Sykes was moving offices to be closer to his staff and that Mr Parker’s staff were moving to be closer to him. Essential health and safety work is being carried out such as improving the ladies toilets and lighting.
She was not aware of work to the reception and said the changes would improve the working conditions of staff.
Councillor Stanton denied staff were being treated with utter contempt” and said: “I do not think there is a councillor in that council chamber that got themselves elected to sign up to job losses.
Acting chief executive Liz Terry said it was “unfortunate” and “misleading” for programmed office refurbishment works to be linked with budget proposals.
She added: “Some of the work is part of a phased, rolling programme.
“The work taking place will include better office lighting and improved toilet facilities for staff and councillors alike.
“The new chief executive will occupy his predecessor’s office. This was last decorated nearly 10 years ago so before Charlie arrives it will be painted and the lighting will be updated.”
She added that a final cost for the works was not yet known and quotes were still being considered and said “The works will be paid for out of the overall £6 million capital budget for the strategy and resources directorate.
“Only a very small element of the final costs will be for decorating offices.”
