Date published: 07 October 2008
A BRITISH Waterways worker who gives visitors a running commentary on the inside of the famous Stanedge canal tunnel has been rewarded for 40 years’ service.
Fred Carter was recently presented with a handwritten citation by the Huddersfield Canal Society as well as life membership.
A spokeswoman for the society said: “Fred is now often found steering the passenger boat or acting as tunnel guide.
“His genial manner combines with an extensive knowledge to guarantee an interesting journey.”
The tunnel runs between Diggle and Marsden with trips starting at the Marsden end.
