Snuffing out danger fireworks
Date published: 07 October 2008
FIREFIGHTERS in Greater Manchester are holding a firework amnesty to cut the number of bonfire night accidents.
The amnesty — which saw fireworks already collected destroyed today — is part of the Treacle Partnership — a county-wide collaboration designed to reduce the impact of fireworks, bonfires and associated anti-social behaviour.
Last year, crews dealt with 731 fires that were linked to November 5 and 58 incidents which were related to fireworks.
Members of the public can call 0800-634 0880 if they have any fireworks they want to get rid of and the fire service will collect them.
Assistant County Fire Officer Steve Beckley said, “Every year we see examples of how dangerous fireworks can be if misused — they are explosives after all.”
