Date published: 13 October 2008
AN Uppermill woman who celebrates her 100th birthday tomorrow has a tried and tested recipe for staying fit and healthy — honey on her toast in the morning.
Alice Cheetham of Willow Bank, Uppermill, lives independently in a flat, does some local shopping, plays whist with friends and goes to a midweek luncheon club. Alice was born in Old Lane, Hollinwood, and later the family moved to Fields New Road, Chadderton.
She started work part-time at Royd Mill, Chamber Road, Oldham, at the tender age of 11. She married her husband John, who died in 1973, at St James’s, Hollinwood, in 1934.
Alice stayed in Chadderton until 1994, when she moved to Uppermill to be closer to her daughter Dorothy in Grasscroft.
Alice had various part-time jobs over the years included helping to propel the tea trolley around the Chronicle building.
She has three grandsons and two great grandsons.
