Pupils join record bid

PUPILS and teachers at Oldham’s New Bridge School were taking part in a world record attempt today.

The pupils — along with many others at different venues — are hoping to break the record for the most people simultaneously performing sign language to a song.

They are supporting the national charity Afasic, which helps children and young people with speech, language and communication impairments and their families.

Helen Langford, from New Bridge, said: “We have great pleasure in taking part in Afasic’s Guinness World Record attempt.

“Anything we can do at New Bridge to raise awareness of young people with disability is a good thing. We will also have great fun rehearsing and performing the song.”

Pupils taking part will be helped to understand what life is like for those who have problems with communication and to help raise awareness of speech, language and communication impairments.

Linda Lascelles, Afasic chief executive, added: “Afasic is 40 years old this year and we are working to raise awareness of this hidden disability, which often gets overlooked, as widely as possible during our anniversary year.

“We hope that the commitment of schools like New Bridge to this attempt to break the world record will help us in achieving this aim.”
