Enough is finally enough for damp-hit tenant

AN OLDHAM man has been forced to move out of his council flat because of its state of disrepair.

Despite several complaints, Mark Cooper says First Choice Homes Oldham have not carried out any repairs to his home in Barlow House, Eldon Street.

There are several leaks, including water dripping through the ceiling in the bathroom, it’s too dangerous to have the lights on and walls covered with damp and mould are crumbling away.

The flat is so uninhabitable, the 28-year-old moved back in with his parents a fortnight ago — despite the fact he is still paying £70 a week rent.

Mr Cooper, a betting shop manager, reported the bathroom leak on September 16.

A plumber called but could not access the flat above. An electrician was sent to disconnect the bathroom light but no-one has returned to fix the problem.

Mr Cooper said: “I have lived here for five years and I have had a few leaks now and again but this is really serious.

“I have not been able to use the bathroom. I am paying full rent to live here but have to sit in darkness. I won’t have the lights on — the electrician told me not to risk it.”

He says he has now had enough and will hand back the keys on October 28.

An FCHO spokesman said: “We are working with our customers to resolve their concerns. We hope to have the matter resolved in due course.”
