Language project launched in Oldham
Date published: 23 October 2008
A NEW community language programme for school teachers and the wider community was promoted at Breeze Hill School.
“Our Languages” is a Department for Children, Schools and Families funded project to support teaching and learning in community languages and partnerships between schools.
The project aims to promote pluralingualism, celebrate pupil achievement and encourage community cohesion.
In Oldham, the programme will be developed to offer teaching of a range of community languages up to A-level.
Regional partnerships across England are involved in the National Centre for Languages project in a variety of activities.
Clusters of participating schools have been established in Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester and London.
Councillor Kay Knox, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families said: “The programme will be brilliant for Oldham.
“Language learning helps us to see that interaction with people from different social identities and cultures is an enriching experience and helps build a cohesive community.”
