Meacher’s warning over energy ‘rip-off’
Date published: 23 October 2008
OLDHAM MP Michael Meacher has spoken out after millions of householders were over-charged by their energy suppliers.
Energy regulator OFGEM highlighted the discrepancies with pre-payment meters and the over-charging of four million electricity customers in areas not connected to gas mains.
Mr Meacher, MP for Oldham West and Royton, said: “I believe this over-charging particularly affects poorer households and is unjust. I have now received assurances from the government minister responsible for this area, Ed Milliband, that if the six utility companies responsible don’t take action before December 1 to stop this rip-off, legal action will be brought forward to prevent unfair pricing.
“It is clear that more control is needed to stop energy companies making excess profits at the expense of their customers. I am therefore pressing for legislation to ensure we have an energy policy that is fair and sustainable.”
