Bid to employ heating helper

OLDHAM could have a full time officer dedicated to cutting fuel poverty among old, vulnerable and sick people.
As gas and electricity prices rise in double figures, the council has applied to the £4 million Scottish Power Energy People’s Trust to pay for the officer.
The money, £63,000 over two years, will be used to help with Oldham’s lead role in the Affordable Warmth (AWARM) strategy in Greater Manchester.
Veronica Jackson, executive director of adult and community services believes that following energy price rises in the last 12 months, the strategy has to find new policies and initiatives.
Her report says: “There is significant need to improve current action given the impact of the credit crunch and continuing high levels of deprivation in the borough.”
The trust will decide on Oldham’s bid in December.
The post is considered vital because of the link between fuel poverty and poor health.
The new officer would target the vulnerable — old, disadvantaged and sick people — and advise them how to get grants for heating, insulation, lagging for hot water tanks, double glazing, and energy efficient lightbulbs.
