A CHADDERTON park is becoming a Mecca for young cyclists and BMX riders.
And now police, cycle experts and safety officers want their help to shape the future use of Chadderton Hall Park for two-wheelers.
Young people will even get free cycle training and bike security there tomorrow.
It’s been organised because of the number of young cyclists using the park in the evening and at weekends.
PCSO Sarah Ward said: “On a weekend we can have anything up to 40 kids on bikes.
“Last week there were about 20 local boys and girls aged up to 14 years old on BMX and mountain bikes riding about at night in the dark using makeshift ramps.
“I spoke to representatives at the Council and Unity Partnership to see how we could make it safer for children riding bikes and also provide the facilities that these cyclists would like to see.”
Developments could include setting up local cycle clubs, off-road facilities or more cycle training and maintenance sessions.
The free cycle awareness day is being held between 10 am and 3.30 pm.
“Dr Bike” sessions are between 11am to 1pm, teaching basic bike fixes and safety checks, followed by bike skills and safety sessions (1-3.30pm).
These are aimed at BMX and mountain bikes, provided by Oldham-based social enterprise Try-Cycles, who specialise in off-road cycling.
All youngsters must wear helmets and have parental consent.
Forms will be available on the day or via e-mail to try-cycles@hotmail.co.uk
The mobile police station will be doing free security marking, and road safety and cycling to school information will be available.
Inspector Dave Willcocks, from Chadderton Neighbourhood Policing team, added: “This is a fantastic initiative to promote cycle safety and skills.
“I would encourage all people who are keen on cycling to attend this event and enjoy it.”
