Rally driver George dies

George Swinbourne
A former Royton garage owner who also gained a reputation as a rally driver has died, aged 78.
George Swinbourne was at the height of his success in the mid-seventies when he won all six events in two hillclimb meetings.
He was at the wheel of a modified 130 miles an hour Ford Escort.
Mr Swinbourne, lived in Rivington Drive, Shaw, owned Thornham Motors in Moss Lane, Royton. He leaves a widow Patricia, a daughter and two granddaughters.
The funeral service and committal will be at Oldham Crematorium on Friday, October 31, at 2.30pm. Afterwards there will be a funeral tea at the Moss Inn, Turf Lane,Royton.
