Tetanus campaign
Date published: 30 October 2008
OLDHAM mums are being offered an incentive to support a UNICEF campaign to eliminate tetanus in mothers and newborn babies in the developing world.
The international children’s organisation is raising money to pay for tetanus vaccines, and Pampers is supporting the cause by pledging to pay for one vaccine for each pack of nappies sold.
The company has also launched a fundraising campaign for people whose children are out of nappies, and has promised to match the money raised by the biggest Oldham fundraiser and turn it into vaccines.
The deadline is set for the end of the year, and money raised will help UNICEF towards its target of paying for 32 million vaccines during 2008.
Immunisation means tetanus has disappeared from the western world, yet each year the disease claims the lives of more than 170,000 mothers and babies in developing countries.
