Family’s fit for a challenge

A SPRINGHEAD family is fighting fit after taking part in a six-month Healthy Family Challenge.

Keith (40) and Sally (36) Ireland, from Carr House Road, took up the Dolmio national challenge in May.

Joined by son Joe (8) and daughter Erin (4), the family were given nutrition and fitness advice to help them adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Small changes have made a big difference with both Keith and Sally shedding pounds and increased energy for all.

Mrs Ireland, a customer service manager, said: “In terms of nutrition, we were taught about regulating portion size and eating more healthily, such as choosing brown pasta and rice.

“We were also encouraged to get out and about more as a family such as going for a walk or swimming instead of just going to the gym.

“After six months, I’ve lost 13 pounds and Keith is having to tighten his belt a notch.

“We sit down to a proper family meal when we can, which Joe loves, and we’ve definitely increased our activity which helps us all have more energy.”

The family’s journey to a healthier lifestyle has been followed by Woman magazine.

Mrs Ireland said: “Local people have definitely noticed us out a lot more and always say hello or ask how we are doing.

“The children have really enjoyed themselves, and have helped make food such as their own pizzas from scratch.

“Hopefully, we can keep the weight off as it has been lost quite gradually through lifestyle changes.

“We originally wanted to get fit and lose weight, but we are also much closer as a family now.”

Nutritionist Fiona Hunter said: “Eating healthy does not have to mean missing out on your favourite foods.

“It’s fine to enjoy less healthy stuff like cake and biscuits occasionally if you eat well most of the time.”

Fitness, health and diet expert Nicki Waterman said: “Your best bet is to find a fitness activity that you and your children will enjoy doing together day-in and day-out.”
